BOOKS I RECOMMEND

The World Is Sound: Nada Brahma: Music and the Landscape of Consciousness by Joachim-Ernst Berendt
Berendt offers a fascinating view on how the world is music not just vibration. If we perceive the world as sound and music, everything is energized and we experience it directly because our bodies are wired for sound. Berendt has an extensive musical background himself, a mystical soul and a great interest in science and its development. I highly recommend this book for its quality and multiple dimensions.

The Mysticism of Sound and Music by Hazrat Inayat Khan
If you’re looking for a book that presents sound from a mystical point of view, this is it. Hazrat Inayat Khan was a renowned musician and Sufi mystic in India when he received the calling to bring the Sufi message of “love, harmony and beauty” to Europe and the United States in the 1920s. As notes on the back cover state, this is a “lucid exposition of music’s divine nature.” The book contains truly inspired commentary that can touch the soul.

Music and Sound in the Healing Arts by John Beaulieu
Beaulieu has done pioneering work with sound. If you have a musical background you may find this of particular interest. He explores vocal energetics, toning, music and life energy, tuning forks, mantras, and so on. He includes meditations and exercises to work with. Also, his CD Calendula is a beautiful exploration into sound with tuning forks.

The Healing Tones of Crystal Bowls by Renee Brodie
While information about Tibetan bowls is available, discovering sources for background and insights about crystal bowls is harder to come by. This book discusses color and sound at length and their relationships to the chakras and even vertebrae. Exercises are incorporated as is a variety of information about toning, finding the note of your spirit and creating structured water with the bowls.

Healing Sounds: The Power of Harmonics by Jonathan Goldman
Goldman too is a pioneer in sound and healing work. This book provides loads of information on harmonics. Chapter titles include: The Science of Harmonics, Harmonics in Shamanism, Tantric Harmonics, Harmonics and Healing. He then explores vowels as mantras working with the chakras in both classical ways and his own. The book finishes with the fundamentals of vocal harmonics and overtoning – the relationship of vocal harmonics and self-created healing sounds. Goldman has many CDs, which are well worth sampling for the right fit.

Shifting Frequencies by Jonathan Goldman
This compilation of pieces first published in the Sedona Journal runs the gamut of topics in easy to digest articles. Developed with the guidance of archangel Shamael, the work is to help all of us shift our frequencies to activate each other and this new era that is emerging. The book covers: • Vocalization, Visualization and a Tonal Language
• Merkabahs
• Sound, Color and Light
• The Waveform Experience
• The Language of Light

Singing Bowls: A Practical Handbook by Eva Jansen
This book provides basic information about Tibetan singing bowls, tingkshas and dorjes. It offers an introduction to the bowls and how they were constructed, background on possible rituals, history and interesting sidebars about inner massage, shamanism and fountaining bowls.

The Mysticism of Sound and Music by Hazrat Inayat Khan
If you’re looking for a book that presents sound from a mystical point of view, this is it.
